Construction Begins on Atlanta Streetcar Line
Construction has begun on a 2.6-mile, 12-stop streetcar line running through downtown Atlanta. The project is supported by a $47.6 million federal grant, the largest of the 2010 TIGER grants. “By connecting seamlessly with other rail lines and bicycle routes, the streetcar will allow residents and tourists to get out of their cars and avoid downtown congestion,” US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood noted at the start of construction. The project is part of what the Secretary LaHood calls America’s “streetcar revival.”
