Durham’s Cigarette Factories Focus of Downtown Redevelopment

The former American Tobacco cigarette factory in Durham has become a poster child for mixed-use urban redevelopment. Its eye-catching collection of restaurants, bars, offices, and shops, along with several other new projects in the area that followed its lead, has brought about a stunning rebirth of Durham’s core. The number of people who call downtown Durham home has risen from just 200 in the mid-1990s to more than 1,500 today.
