At least five sizeable student housing developments are in the planning or construction stages along Tucson’s new Sun Link streetcar line. The housing projects could bring more than 2,000 students within walking distance of the line. “This is part of what a rail system can do, as opposed to a bus system,” said Carlos de Leon, transit services director with the Regional Transportation Authority. According to de Leon, residential and commercial development often will grow in conjunction with fixed public-transit infrastructure like the Sun Link streetcar.
