Los Angeles Housing Redevelopment Largest in United States
A $600 million transformation is underway for the Jordan Downs housing project in Los Angeles. The phased transformation will be the largest such effort in the United States. Over 700 aging housing units will be transformed into a mixed-income community of up to 1,400 apartments and condominiums, with shops and restaurants, native plant gardens, and other community amenities. The city hopes to draw in hundreds of more-affluent residents willing to pay market rate to live side by side with the city’s poorest residents. “In essence, officials intend to raze the buildings, not the community — and radically change its character,” noted the Los Angeles Times.
