The authors find that American passenger rail is in the midst of a renaissance—reinventing itself through short haul routes. Support from states has been essential to help upgrade tracks, operate routes, and redevelop stations. Amtrak ridership is now at record levels and growing fast, with the country’s largest metropolitan areas leading this trend.
