Mixed-Use Neighborhood Project Lands Recognition From Smart Growth Alliance
Under its three-year-old program to advance smart growth by raising industry and public awareness ''of the long-term benefits of well-designed, pedestrian-oriented projects'' that incorporate varied uses and reduce car dependency, the capital region's Smart Growth Alliance (SGA), a coalition of five environmental, business, and research groups, has given its quarterly Smart Growth recognition award to Wood Partners' proposed ''Alta Branch,'' a mixed-use neighborhood on a vacant brownfield lot a quarter-mile from the Branch Avenue Metro Station, with more than 500 condominiums, 50,000 square feet of retail and 60,000 square feet of offices.
''Mixing jobs, retail and housing at Metro stations will offer the type of development the market is currently demanding: walkable neighborhoods where people can live, work and play,'' said Recognition Jury Chairwoman, Maryland Director of the Coalition for Smarter Growth, Jessica Cogan Millman.
Stressing his company's commitment to quality projects, Alta Branch developer Leonard Wood, Jr. noted, ''Land around Metro stations in Prince George's County is ideal for developing and redeveloping successful communities. In addition to the SGA, we are especially pleased to have the support of the surrounding community and civic groups as well.''
